Can I request an EHC needs assessment myself?
Yes. In England, a parent can ask the local authority to carry out an EHC needs assessment if they think their child may need an EHC plan.

What happens next?
The local authority decides whether an assessment is necessary. If it proceeds, it gathers advice and evidence. GOV.UK says the authority will tell you within 16 weeks whether an EHC plan will be made, and where a plan is issued the final plan is normally due within 20 weeks of the assessment request, subject to statutory exceptions.
